Hello Rabbi Shields
I wonder if you could help. I am from Scotland and as I grew up I was told my Grandfather was called Joseph Shields. Some years after my mother died (her maiden name was Helen Shields) my two sisters, my brother and I all received a letter from an ancestry company to say that my grandfather's sister had died in a nursing home in the north of England. On this letter was a rough drawing of our particular Shields family tree. They had my great-grandfather down as Josiah, my grandfather as Josiah then comes my mum's line in this order (William, Gertrude, Helen, another Josiah, and George). The last Josiah we never knew existed. My mum married a man called John Speedie and they had my sisters Joyce and Evelyn, my brother John and me, I'm Suzanne. I was brought up as a Protestant but now my sister Joyce and I are wondering about our Shields name as we think somehow there is a Jewish link. I am married to a Catholic man just to confuse me even more. Is Josiah a typically Jewish name and also my aunty Gert, well I know that's a Jewish name for sure, even my own name of Suzanne is Hebrew. I'm totally confused. Please could you let me know if the name of Shields is really a typical Jewish name. Obviously you are called Shields, so perhaps it is a typical Jewish name. Thank you.
